This course is titled "Health Care Corporate Compliance and Governance" and is a 1-credit course. This course satisfies the Health Care Compliance Certificate. This course will meet live online Saturday 9/25 from 10 am - 12:30 ET pm and Saturday 10/30 from 10 am - 3 pm ET. Six hours of additional class time will be experienced independently by students through asynchronous material.

Description

Students will explore the importance of corporate compliance for health care organizations, review the current health care compliance landscape, and become familiar with key compliance guidance and principles, including the seven elements of an effective compliance program. Students will review compliance policies and learn about best practices for implementation. Students will consider the role of the Compliance Officer and compare/contrast with the role of the General Counsel of a health care organization. The course reading assignments and class exercises will also explore the role of training and education of compliance principles and the importance of promoting a culture of compliance from top down. Lectures will use current health care compliance failures as a teaching tool and will delve into the role of audits and internal monitoring, discipline for non-compliance, and best practices for compliance investigations. With regards to corporate governance, the course will provide an overview of fiduciary duties, with emphasis on the specific challenges faced in the health care industry. The course will conclude with a discussion of how effective health care corporate compliance and governance intersect. The teaching strategies for this course will include readings, lectures, group discussions and case study hypotheticals.
