Description
This class will examine the manifestation of racial and ethnic disparities at different stages in the criminal adjudication process and explore the effectiveness of various legislative and policy reforms that have been proposed or enacted to address or eliminate racial bias in the criminal justice system. The issues to be discussed may include police use of deadly force, racial profiling, sentencing disparities, prosecutorial discretion, felon disenfranchisement, bail reform, jury selection, and the death penalty. Student will be expected to actively engage in robust discussions on the effectiveness of various reform proposals, and there will be mock legislative hearings where students will provide testimony to advocate for (or oppose) specific reforms. There is no exam. Grades will be based on class participation, a 10-page paper, two 5-page papers, and the oral presentation during the mock legislative hearing. .
