Description
This course is a foundational sex and law course. It will examine gender and sex-based discrimination as defined by the Constitution, Title VII, Title VIII, Title IX, the Equal Pay Act, family law and criminal law. We will explore individual, pattern or practice, and class action sex discrimination cases. Class discussion will focus on practical considerations of litigating sex discrimination cases as well as the historical, social, economic, and psychological factors that impact representation of clients who experience sex-based discrimination.

The course textbook is Sex-Based Discrimination by Herman Hill Kay and Tristin K. Green (7th ed. 2012) [ISBN 978-0-314-90717-2]. Additional readings will be posted on the course website on Canvas or you may be required to obtain the readings via the library, the internet, Lexis or Westlaw.
Prepare for each class by reading the material specified on the syllabus for that day. I may make modifications to the readings for the next class based on our group discussions and progress. For this reason, I suggest that you do not read ahead.
