Description

This course will examine a variety of legal issues related to life and education in the context of public and private colleges and universities. Topics explored may include current and ongoing discussions related to race such as Supreme Court affirmative action jurisprudence, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, etc. Gender and gender identity topics include Title IX athletics and transgender identity, Title IX sexual harassment and misconduct. Students will examine the contours of speech rights in the college and university setting like student protest, controversial guest speakers, and academic freedom. Collegiate sports, the rights of immigrant students, the role of the federal government in shaping education policy, and other topics may also be explored. The writing requirement offers students an opportunity to write and present on a topic of their choice pertaining to higher education law.
