Description

This course should probably be called Education and Federal law. We will review the role the federal Constitution and some federal laws play in the manner in which education is conducted in elementary secondary, post-secondary and professional school. We will address equal protection issues tied both to discrimination and the use of affirmative action in education, Title IX (gender discrimination and harassment) issues, the operation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in elementary and secondary school and the aplpciaiton of other anti-discrimination laws in post-secondary education, church and state Free Exercise issues under the first amendment, Free Speech constitutional rights of both students and teachers in schools, and parents’ rights. We may add other issues as we go along.
