Description

During the course of this semester, we will explore a range of issues at the intersection of law and athletics in the professional context. Among other issues, we will engage issues of agency, contract, antitrust, labor, intellectual property, race, and gender. We will engage these topics through analyzing cases, rules, statutes, and current events. In doing so, we will aim to:

  • • Introduce you to the basic regulatory frameworks that govern professional sport in the United States;
  • • Explore the application of several areas of law – including agency, contract, antitrust, and labor – in the sports context;
  • • Enable you to critically evaluate the policy considerations that drive legal developments in professional sports law; and
  • • Expose you to the various roles lawyers can play in the sports industry.

    • This course will culminate with a final exam.

    The textbook we will use is Sports Law and Regulation by Mitten, Davis, Smith, and Duru (4th Edition). Other assigned materials will be posted on MyWCL.
