Description
International Business Transactions provides students with an introduction to cross-border business transactions, with an emphasis on understanding the “business," and not just “legal,” aspects of the transactions covered in the course. It is a survey course that assumes no prior business or business law background. It is suited for both JD and LLM students. It is designed to be taken as an introductory survey course in IBT, rather than as a “capstone” course that would draw upon advanced business law courses. The types of transactions covered in the course include the basic sale of goods across borders, letters of credit as a payment mechanism in international transactions, transactions for services across borders, and foreign direct investment including joint ventures, among others. The number of transactions covered in this survey course means that no transaction is covered in the depth it merits, but the advantage in a survey setting is that students can grasp a wide array of different cross-border business deals. (Important note: this is a course in transactional business law - it does not address international trade or trade law, which in the WCL curriculum is its own course.)

The following books are required for Professor Ken Anderson's Fall IBT course. (The best prices for the books are most likely online, on Amazon or another online bookseller.) It is essential that you get the exact edition specified - earlier editions are very different and will not work for the course. Also note, this is a new, different textbook from the one used in Prof. Anderson’s past IBT courses. Additional readings will be posted as pdfs to the IBT class page on Mywcl. IMPORTANT NOTE: In order that you don’t have to buy the books for the class without knowing whether you will stay in or drop the class, the textbooks are NOT needed for the course until the second week. You WILL need the textbooks by week 2. See the class MyWCL page for readings for week 1 (posted online as pdfs).
