Description

This course provides an introduction to and overview of the international legal system and processes. We will explore the fundamental elements of international law: the sources (e.g., treaties, customary international law) and subjects of international law (states, international organizations, individuals), as well as the processes by which international law is implemented and enforced. We will explore enforcement through a close examination of (1) the interaction between international and domestic law, with a particular focus on how international law interacts with U.S. law, as well as (2) enforcement through international processes such as international courts and arbitration. While the focus of the class is on core elements of the international legal system, we will touch on specific substantive areas of international law, such as human rights, international criminal law and the law concerning the use of armed force.
