Description

Religion and religious-liberty claims play a significant—if sometimes unspoken—role in many of the most important and challenging legal and policy debates today. This course will explore the theoretical underpinnings for those claims by analyzing the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses of the First Amendment and the historical and contemporary roles of religion in American law and public life. The course will also offer a comparative-law perspective on these issues by addressing the concept of religious liberty and the roles of government and religion in the Middle East and elsewhere around the world. The method of assessment will be a two-hour in-class exam.
