Description
This course provides a survey of the rules of evidence and the reasons underlying these rules with a particular emphasis on the Federal Rules of Evidence.
Included are the subjects of relevance, examination of witnesses, expert testimony, admission and exclusion of evidence, writings, the hearsay rule and its exceptions, the Confrontation Clause, and scientific evidence, among other subjects relating to the regulation of proof at trials.
The course will focus on the problems confronted in trials when evidence is offered, emphasizing the practical nature of the application of the Federal Rules of Evidence. Class discussion will revolve around problems that demonstrate how the rules apply, as well as supplemental case law and lecture. The course intends both to equip students with the practical working knowledge that can be used to try a case competently, as well as an understanding of evidence rules that are useful no matter the student's chosen field.
