Description
Advanced study in the commencement of formal proceedings, the adversary system, trial, sentencing, and appeals (“bail to jail”). Topics include bail; decision whether to prosecute; grand jury proceedings; preliminary hearings; speedy trial; guilty pleas and plea bargains; discovery and jury trials; prosecutorial misconduct; the Confrontation Clause and Compulsory Process Clauses; double jeopardy; capital and non-capital sentencing; and direct and habeas corpus appeals. The grade in this course will be based primarily on a final examination, although class participation may also increase your grade.
