Description
The course surveys the First Amendment as it protects freedom of expression and freedom of religion. The reading and discussion will focus primarily on freedom of speech and the many contexts in which it arises, very briefly on freedom of the press, and finally on the protection for religion that is provided by the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause. Class discussion will seek to foster critical thinking about the role and value of free expression and freedom of religion in our society. Discussion involves not only cases but also issues and policy raised by the Supreme Court’s rulings. The grade for the class is based on a take-home, open-book final exam that students may take five hours to complete any time during the exam period.
