Description
This course builds on the basic 2-credit “Legal Ethics” course by adding a practice component. Students may not receive credit for both “Legal Ethics” and “Professional Responsibility: Theory and Practice.” Successful completion of this course satisfies both the ethics requirement and the professional skills requirement for graduation.
In addition to covering all of the issues of legal ethics and professionalism covered in the basic course, students represent low-income clients in the District of Columbia requiring assistance with the drafting of wills and advance directives (living wills, durable powers of attorney for financial matters and for health care decision-making). Under the supervision of the instructor, students work in teams of two interviewing clients, conducting legal research and fact investigations, counseling clients, drafting documents, and helping clients execute those documents.
Course selection gives priority to students in the part-time program. In addition to the class meeting at night, all work can be completed on evenings and weekends, to accommodate law students who work full-time during the day.
