An examination of the ethical obligations of lawyers, with a primary focus on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, a version of which has been adopted in most states (all except for California) and Washington, D.C.

Lisa Lerman and Philip Schrag, Ethical Problems in the Practice of Law (Aspen Publ. 3d ed. 2012) [“Casebook”]; and Stephen Gillers, Roy Simon, and Andrew Perlman, Regulation of Lawyers: Statutes and Standards Concise Edition 2014 [“Model Rules”]. Please note: It is essential that students use the identified editions of the Casebook and Model Rules, as there have been significant rules changes that are not reflected in prior editions of either. Used copies of the Casebook may be available, as this edition has been used the last two times the course was taught. With regard to the Casebook, students may use the “SMARTe Edition.”
