Textbooks and Other Materials

The textbook information on this page was provided by the instructor. Students should use this information when considering purchases from the AU Campus Store or other vendors. Students may check to determine if books are currently available for purchase online.

You are required to use Randy E. Barnett & Nathan B. Oman, Contracts: Cases and Doctrine (6th ed. 2017) [hereinafter Casebook].

You may also choose to buy Steven J. Burton & Melvin A. Eisenberg, Contract Law: Selected Source Materials (2017 ed.) [hereinafter Supp. or Supplement], which many students find handy. You can certainly manage without the Supplement by using alternative sources (like older editions, or online sources, or materials scattered throughout the Casebook), but doing so may require some additional time to locate the correct materials.

First Class Readings

Before the first class (Monday, August 21), prepare pages 33-44 in the Casebook. “Prepare” means you should read the assigned materials and brief each case using the following headings in your case brief, to the extent possible: Facts, Procedural History, Issue(s), Holding(s), and Reasoning. To help prepare your brief, first view the PowerPoint posted on the course website on my.WCL. In addition, for the first class, you should work the problems on pages 43-44, including all variations, and you should read the syllabus.

Also, please hand in a hard copy of a completed questionnaire. (The questionnaire form is posted on my.WCL.)

You may wish to get started on the assignment for the second class (Wednesday, August 23) by reading “Sources of Contract Law” (posted on my.WCL). The full assignment for the second class, and a number of subsequent classes, appears in List of Assignments, Part 1 (also posted on my.WCL).
