Communication No. 1697, dated December 22, 1970, denouncing the arbitrary arrest and maltreatment of the Brazilian lawyers Drs. Heleno Claudio Fragoso, Augusto Sussekind and George Tavares.
The Commission considered this complaint at its Twenty-fifth Session (March 1971) and appointed Dr. Durward V. Sandifer as rapporteur for the case. Dr. Sandifer presented a report with the recommendation that the denunciation be transmitted to the Government of Brazil with a request for information, in accordance with Articles 42 and 44 of the Regulations.
The Commission approved the recommendation of the rapporteur, and in accordance with the decision reached, sent a note to the Government of Brazil on May 10, 1971.
That Government, in a note dated August 27, 1971 (No. 7) informed the Commission that this request had been referred to the competent authorities.
At the Twenty-sixth Session (October-November 1971), the Commission decided to give the Government of Brazil until December 28, 1971 to supply the information requested, postponing to that date the expiration as provided in Article 51 of its Regulations.
