Conference on Human Rights and the Obama Administration Features Human Rights Leaders

On April 28-29, American University Washington College of Law and American University will present "Human Rights and the Obama Administration," a two day conference devoted to exploring the current administration's accomplishments, shortcomings, and future goals in human rights domestically and abroad. Speakers include significant human rights figures, government officials, civil society leaders and academics. Immigration, national security, the Middle East, and other issues wil be examined. MORE

Law School Presents 12th Annual Peter M. Cicchino Awards

On April 13, American University Washington College of Law held the 2011 Peter M. Cicchino Awards, named for beloved former professor Peter M. Cicchino, who passed away in 2000. This year's winners included Javier Vasquez '96, an advocate for public health access, Whitney Loucheim '95 and Penelope Spain '95, alumni who have created a youth mentoring organization, and Richael Faithful '11, a community organizer. Professor Cynthia Jones Wins American University Faculty Award

American University Washington College of Law congratulates Professor Cynthia Jones '89 who was presented with the University Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching in a Full-time Appointment at the Faculty Recognition Dinner at the National Press Club on April 10. In nominating Professor Jones for the award, Dean Claudio Grossman stated:  "Her creative and innovative approach to teaching has earned her a well-deserved reputation as an outstanding educator."

European Law Moot Court Team Wins Best Commission Representative Award in All-European Final in Luxembourg

A team of third-year students Sârra-Tilila Bounfour, Lillian Cuadra, Ramon Hernandez, and Caitlin O’Leary earned a series of honors at the European LawMoot Court Competition in Luxembourg earlier this month. The team was sponsored by Professor Fernanda Nicola, and coached by visiting professor Dr. Tamara Takacs. Read more about the team's accomplishments.

Students Chosen for Prestigious Presidential Management Fellows Program

American University Washington College of Law congratulates students Holly Chapin, Lillian Cuadra, Pedro de Lencastre, Anna Elazan, Bryan Evans, Mary Pavlik, Courtney Perez, Domenic Senger-Schenck, Kristina Shea, and Sara Velde, who were chosen as finalists for the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program from a pool of over 9,000 applicants. The PMF Program was established by Executive Order in 1977 and aims to recruit outstanding individuals who have an interest and commitment to excellence in Federal public policies and programs. American University had a total of 23 graduate students chosen.

Center for International Commercial Arbitration Launches International Commercial Arbitration Brief

The Center for Internation Commercial Arbitration announces the launch of the International Commercial Arbitration Brief. The purpose of the Brief is to provide timely insights into developments in the field and to highlight trends and practices occurring around the globe. The Brief welcomes pieces from both practitioners and students, and will publish one issue per semester with a general focus on international commercial arbitration, but will also encompass related areas. The publication seeks to provide practitioners, academics, and students an opportunity to collaborate on and publish articles and resource materials on international arbitration. MORE

Law School Launches New Military Justice Summer Program

American University Washington College of Law is proud to announce the launch of a new Military Justice Summer Program.  The Military Justice Summer Program offers a broad range of seminars on international and domestic military law. The program engages law students and practitioners from around the world in intensive training and discussion over a one-week period. The program is June 19-24, and is presented by the National Institute of Military Justice. MORE 

Dean Grossman Participates in IALS Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Dean Claudio Grossman, an International Association of Law Schools Board Member, and Associate Dean Tony Varona participated in the IALS Conference on Teaching, Legal Education & Strategic Planning, at the University of Buenos Aires April 13-15.  This conference, attended by representatives from over 100 law schools, addressed challenges facing legal education in the 21st century.  During this time, Dean Grossman also participated in preparatory work for the World Human Rights Conference to be held next year in India.
