This week Ropes & Gray announced the five recipients of the 2017 Ropes & Gray Roscoe Trimmier Jr. Diversity Scholarship, including American University Washington College of Law 2L Christina Ravelo. The scholarship honors the memory of Roscoe Trimmier Jr., an accomplished trial lawyer, the firm’s first African-American partner and a pioneering leader of the firm’s diversity efforts.

The scholarship recipients each receive a $25,000 award to offset the expenses of their legal education. They will join the firm as summer associates in 2017, with two joining the firm’s Boston office, one joining in Chicago, and two in New York.

This year’s recipients are:

  • Kenji Alexander, New York University School of Law
  • Sofia McDonald, New York University School of Law
  • Christina Ravelo, American University Washington College of Law
  • Lindsay Richardson, University of South Carolina School of Law
  • Benjamin Ruano, Boston College Law School

“These outstanding students exemplify the accomplishment, leadership and dedication that defined Roscoe Trimmier’s life and career,” said Josh Levy, partner and co-chair of the firm’s diversity committee. “Roscoe’s dedication to promoting inclusion and diversity at Ropes & Gray, and within the legal profession at large, was unparalleled. He challenged us all to be thoughtful and innovative in how we cultivate diversity in order to create a culture where attorneys of all backgrounds can grow and thrive professionally. We are excited to help guide and support these young lawyers, as well as to benefit from their considerable talents and diverse perspectives.”

The Roscoe Trimmier Jr. Diversity Scholarship was established in 2015 to commemorate Mr. Trimmier’s legacy and to support students from backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in the legal profession. The inaugural scholarship recipients were announced in November 2015 and served as summer associates at Ropes & Gray in 2016.
