American University Washington College of Law rising 2L Ana Saragoza was featured on the cover of the July/August issue of Washington Lawyer, which highlighted membership and leadership within the D.C. Bar.

In the cover story, Saragoza discusses her dedication to public interest legal work. Her previous service to D.C.’s Teach for America program led her to the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, working as a bilingual intake coordinator for two years. This summer, she worked for the Legal Counsel of the Elderly, and will begin an internship with the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia come fall.

Saragoza noted the importance of having leadership at the Bar which promotes such work, and said she was excited when Susie Hoffmanfounding board chair of the Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment and Advocacy Project and board member for the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless—was elected president.

"It showed the Bar members really value public service, and we need the next generation of lawyers to be as passionate about public service as [Hoffman] is," Saragoza said.

Along with the Bar’s continued support and engagement with pro bono services, Saragoza told Washington Lawyer the D.C. Bar should seek to increase law school outreach, promoting programs like the Advice & Referral Clinic and playing an active role in facilitating bar exam preparation for local students.
