Rep. Jamie Raskin Introduces His Former Law Student, and Fellow Impeachment Manager, Delegate Stacey Plaskett ’94, During Impeachment Trial

Congressman and AUWCL Professor Emeritus Jamie Raskin, the lead house impeachment manager in the second impeachment trial of former President Donald J. Trump, introduced his fellow impeachment manager Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett ’94 on the Senate floor on day two of the trial, noting their shared connection to American University Washington College of Law.

“As lead manager, this is a moment of special pride for me because Rep. Plaskett is not only the first Delegate to be on a team of impeachment managers in American history, but she was also my law student at American University Washington College of Law,” Raskin said during his introduction. “I hope I’m not violating any federal education records laws when I say she was an ‘A’ student then and she is an ‘A+’ student now.” Plaskett, who serves as the delegate from the Virgin Islands, received her JD from AUWCL in 1994.
Plaskett’s presentation on Wednesday, Feb. 10, included describing unseen footage of congressional leaders fleeing the Jan. 6 insurgency.
“The vice president, the speaker of the House, the first and second in line to the presidency, were performing their constitutional duties presiding over the election certification, and they were put in danger,” said Plaskett, who is a former prosecutor.
At the beginning of her evening presentation, the Washington Post notes in a story about her role as an impeachment manager, Plaskett shared that she’d been in the Capitol on another harrowing day when all the lives of those working inside were in danger. On Sept. 11, 2001, Plaskett was a staffer in the House, and she reflected on how she might be dead if Flight 93 had reached the Capitol as planned.

In January, Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed nine Democrats to serve as impeachment managers, including Congressman Raskin, who represents Maryland’s 8th Congressional District, and Congresswoman Plaskett. Raskin was named the lead impeachment manager. Read about their connections to AUWCL.
