Legal Rhetoric Program Hosts Third Annual Legal Writing Workshop

May 1, 2018

On Friday, April 27 the Legal Rhetoric Program at American University Washington College of Law hosted the Third Annual Legal Writing Workshop for practicing attorneys.

More than 60 participants attended the intensive program, which was developed for Virginia lawyers in 2016 in direct response to observations and recommendations about lawyer communications skills made during the 2012 Virginia State Bar Conclave on the Future of Legal Education in Virginia. The program is a collaborative effort of the Legal Rhetoric Program, Virginia State Bar Section on Education of Lawyers, Virginia CLE, and the Virginia Bar Association’s Law Practice Management Division.

The Honorable Mary Grace O’Brien of the Virginia Court of Appeals, the Honorable David W. Lannetti of the Norfolk Circuit Court, John M. Bredehoft of Kaufman & Canoles, Andrea L. Bridgeman of Freddie Mac, and L. Steven Emmert of Sykes, Bourdon, Ahern & Levy, P.C., participated in breakout sessions on litigation and transactional practice, a professionalism panel, and an oral and written advocacy roundtable. Professors Heather E. Ridenour and David H. Spratt were the primary presenters and spoke about effective writing strategies, tailoring documents to serve audience and purpose, organization, rule synthesis, effective email communication, and persuasive fact characterization.
