As America’s youth strike across the country for legislative action to combat climate change, American University Washington College of Law’s Program on Environmental and Energy Law (PEEL) hosted a teach-in event in solidarity with this national effort on Friday, Sept. 20.

PEEL teamed up with climate action organizations Zero Hour, Moms Clean Air Force, and the Youth Climate Strike Network to host The Climate Change Law & Policy Teach-In. The event aimed to attract local youth headed to Capitol Hill for climate strike demonstrations in order to teach them more about climate change policy, impact, and legal action.

“We are excited to partner with the inspiring young organizers of the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia Youth Climate Strikes to help ensure that tomorrow’s leaders are well informed and equipped to face the enormous challenges climate change will unfortunately pose for them and for future generations, both in the U.S. and around the world,” said PEEL Director and Professor Amanda Leiter.

AUWCL Professor Bill Snape, senior counsel with the Center for Biological Diversity, opened the teach-in session with an overview of U.S. climate change law and policy. Leiter then summarized the impacts of climate change on frontline communities. Professor David Hunter explored international legal actions to address the climate crisis. A question and answer period was held following each speaker.
