AUWCL Sponsors 20th Annual Grotius Lecture to Open ASIL Annual Meeting

On April 4, American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) sponsored the 20th Annual Grotius Lecture opening the American Society of International Law’s (ASIL) 112th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Leading and emerging voices in international legal scholarship, policy, and practice gathered to discuss this year’s theme, “International Adjudication: Peaks, Valleys, and Rolling Hills.”

The Grotius Lecture was delivered by Judge Joan Donoghue of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Donoghue has served on the court since 2010. Prior to her election to ICJ, Donoghue had a long career in the U.S. Government, serving from 2007 to 2010 as the Principal Deputy Legal Adviser of the U.S. Department of State. In addition to her government service, Donoghue has taught courses at the University of California, Berkeley, Georgetown University, and George Washington University.

Dapo Akande, professor of Public International Law at the University of Oxford, and co-director of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict, served as the Distinguished Discussant. Akande has held visiting professorships at Yale Law School, the University of Miami School of Law, the University of Vienna, and Catolica Global Law School, Lisbon, Portugal. He was the 2015 Sir Ninian Stephen Visiting Scholar at the University of Melbourne Law School’s Asia-Pacific Centre for Military Law. Akande is also a member of the International Advisory Panel for the American Law Institute’s project on the Restatement Fourth, The Foreign Relations Law of the United States. He is a trustee on the board of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and a counsellor of the American Society of International Law.

AUWCL Professor Padideh Ala’i, director of International and Comparative Legal Studies, served as moderator for the lecture.

Almost 20 years ago, the International Legal Studies Program at AUWCL and ASIL launched the Grotius Lecture as an opening event for ASIL's annual meeting. The event is named after Hugo Grotius, who is considered the father of international law, and provides a forum for respected diplomats, scholars, and lawyers to present their ideas to ASIL members and the international legal community.

David Armitage, Lloyd C. Blankfein Professor of History at Harvard University, delivered the 19th Annual Grotius Lecture at the 111th ASIL Annual Meeting. The theme, “What International Law Values,” considered the normative basis of international law and how those goals are realized in practice.

Mary Dudziak, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Law, Emory University School of Law was the Distinguished Discussant for the 19th Annual Groutis Lecture.

Sir Kenneth Keith, former judge of the International Court of Justice, delivered the 17th Annual Grotius Lecture at the 109th ASIL Annual Meeting.

Radhika Coomaraswamy, former AUWCL Dean Claudio Grossman, and University of Georgia School of Law Professor Diane Marie Amann discuss the 108th ASIL Annual Meeting theme, “Women and Children: The Cutting Edge of International Law,” at the 16th Annual Grotius Lecture.

Chilean President Michele Bachelet was the 18th Annual Grotius Lecturer as part of the 110th ASIL Annual Meeting. Keynote addresses, panels and programs focused on the meeting’s theme, “Charting New Frontiers in International Law,” and the challenges faced in the 21st century.

AUWCL Dean Camille Nelson moderated the 19th Annual Grotius Lecture opening the American Society of International Law’s 111th Annual Meeting in Washington D.C.

The 20th Annual Grotius Lecture was delivered by Judge Joan Donoghue of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Donoghue has served on the court since 2010.
