AUWCL Professor Elizabeth Keith Named Editor-in-Chief of The Second Draft

Legal Writing Institute Publication Promotes Conversation about Legal Writing and Research

American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) Professor Elizabeth Keith has been appointed to serve as the 2021 Editor-in-Chief of The Second Draft, a peer-reviewed publication of the Legal Writing Institute (LWI).

Keith – a Professor of Legal Rhetoric whose areas of expertise include appellate advocacy, trial advocacy, and legal writing, reasoning and research – served previously as a member of journal’s editorial board for two years. The Second Draft is dedicated to sharing ideas related to teaching legal research and writing through the publication of short essays and articles that combine theory with practical experience, along with personal insight. The journal aims at publishing pieces reflective of the voices and diverse needs of the legal writing community.

Prior to joining the AUWCL faculty in 2008, Keith taught both first-year and upper-level courses in the Legal Research, Writing, and Analysis program at the Antonin Scalia Law School, where she also served as Assistant Director and Acting Director of the LRWA Program. Before her transition into academia, Keith practiced civil litigation with Odin, Feldman & Pittleman, P.C. in Fairfax, Virginia. 

Keith has a B.A. with distinction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a J.D. cum laude from George Mason School of Law, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the George Mason Law Review. She is currently a member of the LWI, the Virginia State Bar, and the American Bar Association.
