American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) is pleased to announce Alexander W. Joel as Scholar-in-Residence of AUWCL’s soon-to-be launched Program on Technology, Security, and Law (further announcements on the program will come this fall).

Joel is on leave from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), where he served for over a decade as the Chief of the Office of Civil Liberties, Privacy and Transparency.  In that role, Joel helped ensure protections of privacy and civil liberties were incorporated in Intelligence Community policies and procedures; reviewed complaints of possible abuses of privacy and civil liberties in programs and operations administered by the ODNI; and ensured that the use of technology sustain, and do not erode, privacy. Additionally, Joel served as the ODNI’s Chief Transparency Officer, where he chaired the Intelligence Transparency Council.

As Scholar-in-Residence of the Program on Technology, Security, and Law, Joel will conduct research, develop programming, and teach courses focused on the intersections between the law, national security, technology, and privacy.
