On Saturday, March 30, the American University Washington College of Law's (AUWCL) Office of Diversity and Inclusion sponsored the 23rd Annual Sylvania Woods Conference on African Americans and the Law.

This year the conference was entitled “Criminal Justice Reform in the 21st Century:  The Path Forward,” and Professor Angela J. Davis led an enlightening morning discussion among a panel of stakeholders on the topic.

The day’s activities also included the annual awards luncheon, hosted by Midwin Charles ’99, during which District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine received the North Star Award. The North Star recognizes an individual who has distinguished themselves in service to the African American community and/or AUWCL.

Members of the Woods family were also welcomed and recognized, and a number of alumni attended the event.  Finally, the Black Law Students Association offered a roundtable discussion on employment issues led by Ashley Scott, senior director of the Office of Career and Professional Development
