On April 18, over 130 AUWCL students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the Cicchino family gathered for the 17th Annual Cicchino Public Service Awards Dinner. This annual event, named in honor of the life and legacy of Professor Peter M. Cicchino, highlights the work of public interest advocates and awardees and recognizes those who have dedicated their time in service of others.

1L Receives Prestigious Public Interest Labor Fellowship

Evelyn Haro, a 1L at American University Washington College of Law in the evening section, has been selected for the highly competitive Peggy Browning Fellowship Program, which funds law students who dedicate their summers to advancing workers’ rights. Haro will spend 10 weeks in the legal department of Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a labor union that represents almost 1.9 million workers in more than 100 occupations in the United States and Canada.

On April 23, American University Washington College of Law will welcome many members of the legal community to its annual Sylvania Woods Conference on African Americans and the Law, which in 2016 celebrates 20 years since its founding. The conference will examine issues related to public policy, politics, law, and education and their impact on the African-American community over these last twenty years that have included the historic, two-term administration of President Barack Obama.

AUWCL Expands Yellow Ribbon Program for Veterans

American University Washington College of Law is now able to offer expanded Yellow Ribbon Program (YRP) tuition assistance to qualifying veterans. With the full support of administrators, including Dean Claudio Grossman, AUWCL removed the cap on assistance to support an unlimited number of students with free tuition, in conjunction with the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the matched Yellow Ribbon funds.

Lynch as our 2016 Commencement speaker. The law school’s commencement will be held Sunday, May 22, and Attorney General Lynch will be presented with an honorary doctor of laws degree at the ceremony.
