The increasing number of populist leaders around the world has gone hand in hand with the phenomena of democratic decline and rule of law backsliding. Some of these charismatic leaders have been called “legalistic autocrats” because of their ability to void of content existing legal guarantees protecting judicial independence, voting rights and media pluralism.
