Despite the growing prominence of human rights-related rhetoric and advocacy on the national and international stage, the field of human rights remains controversial and problematic in many respects. Throughout the year, students participating in the Human Rights Reading Group will confront the dilemmas and issues that arise in connection with human rights, focusing in particular on how acknowledgement of such critiques can help human rights advocates better navigate the field with creativity and critical reflection. Participants will learn how to assess the philosophical and practical underpinnings of human rights and how to ethically, pragmatically, and responsibly choose to critique and defend policies.
