""Hasta La Raíz" Documentary Screening and Conversation with Ana Maria Belique

The Academy on Human Rights is happy to present a screening of "Hasta La Rais" and a conversation with cast member Ana Maria Belique.

 Imagine the country where you were born and raised tell you one day that you do not belong anymore because of your parents’ origins. You’d be forced to deny who you are, to hide your roots, excluded from civil life, and condemned to live in poverty. ‘Down to the Root’ is the story of three women facing this reality in the Dominican Republic where a part of society rejects them while another embraces and fights alongside them on a journey toward the recognition of their rights, and a proud re-encounter with their identity.

 Ana Maria Belique, a cast member in the documentary, is the coordinator of Reconocido (Red Común Nacional Organizada de Ciudadanos/as Domininicanos/as), a movement that campaigns for citizenship rights and equality for all Dominicans of Haitian descent, mobilizes and empowers marginalised communities, and accompanies people who need legal support to access their documents.

La Academia de Derechos Humanos y Derecho Humanitario presenta una proyección de "Hasta La Raíz" y una conversación con la activista y parte del elenco, Ana Maria Belique. La discusión de Belique se centrará en el quinto aniversario de la decisión 168-13 del Tribunal Constitucional, una decisión que desnacionalizó a miles de dominicanos.

Imagina que el país donde naciste y te criaste te dijo un día que ya no perteneces a el, debido a los orígenes de tus padres. Te verías obligado a negar quién eres, a ocultar tus raíces, excluirte de la vida civil y estar condenado a vivir en la pobreza. 'Down to the Root' es la historia de tres mujeres que enfrentan esta realidad en la República Dominicana, donde una parte de la sociedad las rechaza mientras otra las abraza y lucha junto a ellas en un viaje hacia el reconocimiento de sus derechos y un orgulloso reencuentro con su identidad.

Ana Maria Belique, miembro del reparto del documental, es ex-alumna de la Academia y de su Programa de Estudios Avanzados en Derechos Humanos, es la coordinadora de reconoci.do (Red Común Nacional Organizada de Ciudadanos / as Dominicanos / as), un movimiento que hace campaña por los derechos de ciudadanía e igualdad para todos los dominicanos de ascendencia haitiana, moviliza y empodera a los marginados comunidades, y acompaña a las personas que necesitan apoyo legal para acceder a sus documentos.

International Suite Talk: Effective Advocacy in Commercial Arbitration

On September 25, 2019 at noon (International SUite, room Y360) and as part of the International Suite Talks, Christina Beharry from Foley Hoag will discuss her experience as counsel and will share advice on effective advocacy in arbitration. 

Christina’s practice focuses on public international law, investor-state and commercial arbitration, and trade and investment policy. The event is free and open to the public. Pizza will be served. 

On the Docket: Looking Ahead at the New Supreme Court Term

Join the Program  on Law and Government and the ABA for an in-depth discussion on the upcoming Supreme Court Term. With several critical issues not being addressed the previous year, this upcoming term is sure to be full of consequential rulings and developments of the law. This annual event, moderated by WCL Professor Steve Wermiel, brings in Supreme Court experts to discuss those hot button issues that the Court is likely to address in the upcoming term.
