NatSec Brown Bags

12:00PM - 01:00PM Washington College of Law

We are excited to announce TLS’ new student-focused initiative, NatSec Brown Bags, with TLS Scholars-in-Residence Corin Stone and Alex Joel, and others from the TLS team.

Are you interested in national security but don’t know much about it? Do you want to work in the Intelligence Community but aren’t sure how to apply? Do you just want to chat about current legal developments related to national security?

Come join TLS national security professionals for a monthly informal chat about NatSec issues that span the Intelligence Community, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Defense, the US Government, privacy, and current events. We’ll answer your questions and provide thoughts on job opportunities, work-life balance, and more. No stress, just fun!

Who: Any WCL student – no need to have taken a national security class or have any background in natsec – just need to be interested!

When: Second Thursday of every month, 12-1pm. BYO lunch!

             [Nov 12, Dec 10, Jan 14, etc…]

Why: To give students an informal opportunity to chat with seasoned national security professionals about national security careers and other topics. To provide a better understanding of the US government’s national security agencies, roles, policies, and issues in an informal setting. To provide the opportunity for students to ask questions and get informal advice and mentoring, even if not taking a NatSec course.

At the Intersection: Speaking Truth to Power featuring Michael Atkinson VIEW ALL EVENTS

03:00PM - 04:00PM Washington College of Law

Please join us for an in-depth conversation featuring former Inspector General of the Intelligence Community Michael Atkinson and TLS Scholar-in-Residence Alex Joel.

Mr. Atkinson will reflect on his career in the Department of Justice and as the Inspector General of the IC. We will examine the vital role inspectors general play in national security, and in particular, the need for IG independence in supporting IC professionals who raise concerns through authorized channels. We will discuss Mr. Atkinson’s experience in handling the whistleblower complaint regarding Ukraine, and reflect on lessons learned regarding the importance of speaking truth to power.

Summer Law Program in The Hague Information Session

12:00PM - 01:00PM Online via Zoom

Please join the War Crimes Research Office on Friday, January 15 at noon learn about this year's Summer Program in International Criminal Law and International Legal Approaches to Terrorism (The Hague Program)!

Due to the ongoing pandemic, American University Washington College of Law will not offer programs requiring travel abroad in summer 2021. However, the Hague Program was successfully held online in 2020, and we are pleased to continue to offer it in a virtual format this year. While we are disappointed that we will not be able to offer the program in The Hague this summer, we are excited to offer you the opportunity to connect with WCL classmates, network with guest speakers, and dive into areas of law that you haven’t explored much during the first year of law school.

Join us Friday, January 15 at noon to hear from past students about their experience on the program, how to enroll, and more! Questions? email hagueprogram@wcl.american.edu, or visit the program webpage: https://www.wcl.american.edu/impact/initiatives-programs/warcrimes/summer-law-program-in-the-hague/2021-online-program-in-international-criminal-law-and-international-legal-approaches-to-terrorism/
