SIEL 6th Biennial Global Conference: "International Economic Law in Unsettling Times"

All Day Washington College of Law

The 6th Biennial Global Conference of the Society for International Economic Law (SIEL) is hosted by SIEL and AUWCL in Washington DC, July 12-14, 2018.

The Conference Theme is "International Economic Law in Unsettling Times". Compelling issues such as the tension between global liberalism vs. state sovereignty in international investment and trade, the uncertainties of monetary law resulting from the unresolved global financial and debt crises, the break down of political consensus in states that traditionally supported free trade, will be at the heart of this Conference.

The Conference is expected to attract attendance of 350 members and others, including scholars, US and foreign government officials, diplomats, practitioners, business community representatives and students.

SIEL is the world's only global scholarly society in international economic law.

The Transformation or Reconstitution of Europe

04:30PM - 06:30PM Washington College of Law

This innovative study on the European Court of Justice (ECJ) examines the jurisprudence of the Court on immigration, free movement and criminal law through the lenses of the American critical legal studies (CLS) perspective. In interpreting EU law, the Court has not merely reconstituted the national legal matrix at the supranational level, but has also transformed Europe and shaken the well-established, often formalist, ways of thinking about law in the Member States.

Moderator: Federiga Bindi, Senior Fellow, SAIS John Hopkins

Authors: Siniša Rodin (Judge CJEU Luxembourg), Tamara Perišin (University of Zagreb) Fernanda Nicola (AU WCL)

Commentators: Roberto Mastroianni (University of Naples); John Morijn (New York University), Philomila Tsoukala (Georgetown Law Center)
