JD Transfer for LL.M. and Foreign Lawyers

Foreign law graduates who have received an LL.M. degree from an ABA accredited law school or foreign law school with equivalent standards are eligible to apply to American University Washington College of Law as a JD Transfer student. This unique opportunity will allow students to build on the skills already attained in the LL.M. program. This program is especially geared towards foreign law graduates with an interest in immersing themselves in the US legal culture and obtaining a full Juris Doctor (JD).

Under exceptional circumstances the JD Admissions Committee will consider candidates who have completed their first law degree and are licensed to practice in their home country, but do not have an LL.M. These applicants may apply for admission to our JD program, with advanced standing.

Students admitted to the JD may be able to apply up to 28 transfer credits towards the JD degree. Students who are interested in the dual LL.M. and JD degrees must follow all necessary admissions procedures and complete all required forms by the June 15th application deadline.
