Practitioner-in-Residence Adrian Alvarez Honored with Hispanic Bar Association Rising Star Award

Nov. 2, 2017

American University Washington College of Law congratulates Practitioner-in-Residence Adrian Alvarez ‘10, who is being honored with this year’s Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia Rising Star Award. The award “recognizes an active member of the legal profession with ten years or less experience, principled service in the legal profession, and outstanding contributions to the legal profession.”

Alvarez joined the AUWCL faculty in August 2017, and is teaching in the Disability Rights Law Clinic. Previously he was a senior attorney with the Children’s Law Center (CLC), where he oversaw a caseload of 30-plus patient families through CLC’s medical-legal partnership in the areas of special education law, housing conditions law, public benefits, and access to healthcare.

“In his short time with us in the Disability Rights Law Clinic, Adrian has shone as a teacher, clinical supervisor, budding scholar, and colleague,” said Professor Robert Dinerstein, associate dean for experiential education and director of Clinical Programs. “We knew he was a star when we hired him, and the Rising Star Award from the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia confirms that judgment. We are proud to have him as a member of our AUWCL community.”

Alvarez will be presented with the Rising Star Award Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, at the Association’s annual Equal Justice Awards gala. That same evening Julio A. Castillo, Clerk of the D.C. Court of Appeals, will be recognized with the Judge Ricardo M. Urbina Lifetime Achievement Award and both the Whitman-Walker Clinic Legal Services Program and Abel Enrique Núñez, executive director of the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), will receive Hugh A. Johnson, Jr. Memorial Awards.
