The panel discussion was moderated by Professor Padideh Ala’i, the Director of International and Comparative Legal Studies and the Trade, Investment and Development Program. On October 11, 2018, Yerxa Rufus, President of the National Foreign Trade Council, spoke at AUWCL on "The Great Paradox: Economic Nationalism in an Interdependent Age."  Yerxa discussed the growing trend towards economic nationalism, and raised a major economic question of our time: will this trend disrupt global growth and lead to a breakdown of world order, or will these tensions be resolved in a way that creates fairer, more balanced economic relations? Yerxa also urged a more careful public dialogue about the policy options Americans face in the coming battle over the direction of US policy. The lecture is part of the Wenger Distinguished Lecture on Trade series organized annually by the Trade, Investment and Development Program. The lectures are sponsored by the Henry E. & Consuelo S. Wenger Foundation.

This is the fifth year that WCL has hosted the AARR. This year, 14 teams competed from the US, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Columbia and Brazil. Two best teams from South America and 2 best teams from North America were chosen to participate in the final round in Geneva. The panelists judging the 2018 AARR consisted of WTO Counsellors, World Bank consultants, US Trade Representatives officials, law school professors, DC-based and overseas trade lawyers, think tanks economists, and foreign governments’ officials.
