PIJIP Professors Sean Flynn, Peter Jaszi, and Michael Carroll were among seven law professors and practitioners who jointly drafted comments on pending South African copyright legislation from the Copyright User Rights Network and Creative Commons. Their comments supported the inclusion of a fair use provision in the current legislation.

The Global Expert Network on Copyright User Rights provides technical assistance to governments amending copyright laws, with a focus on the promotion of open, flexible and general copyright exceptions. Creative Commons develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical infrastructure that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and innovation.

The authors subsequently wrote an op-ed in IP-Watch suggesting that "South Africa's Proposed Copyright Fair Use Right Should Be a Model for the World."
