A Message from the Director

May 13, 2019

There’s something special about studying law in the Nation’s capital. And no other school offers such a wide range of experiential, curricular and extra-curricular opportunities to help jump-start and sustain your career at the center of the modern administrative state.

This year, the Program on Law and Government continued to connect students, faculty, alumni and friends of American University Washington College of Law through events, mentoring, and career counseling forums. We added courses designed to help differentiate you as a legislative and regulatory expert. We brought elected officials, judges and federal agency General Counsels to campus for high-profile networking events. And we celebrated 20 years of empowering law students and high school students at the intersection of constitutional law and civic engagement through the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project.

We invite you to review highlights from this past year. Follow us on social media to stay up-to-date. And send your feedback and advice about how we can work with you to better advance your goals working in and around government. There’s no better time or place to be a lawyer than right here, right now!

Thank you.
Prof. Fernando Laguarda
Faculty Director

“I consider the Program on Law and Government to be my home at the Washington College of Law.”

Building Community

The Program on Law & Government brings together students, faculty, alumni, and partner organizations. During the 2018-2019 Academic Year, the Program hosted and co-hosted 25 events with over 1300+ attendees. We welcomed 64 guest speakers to campus and about a third of our events featured a AUWCL alumnus (19 total alumni!) In addition, for our Marshall Brennan anniversary celebration, we had over 50 individual donors. Our programming gives students the opportunity to build connections with alumni and strengthens alumni connections to AUWCL.

“I have seen the Program on Law & Government work tirelessly to give WCL students what they most need for their career and educational goals. Whether through job connections, networking opportunities, or exposure to the interworkings of the Hill, the PLG faculty and staff always prioritizes student aspirations.” – Caitlin Remmel, 2L

“The Program on Law and Government has been key to my success at WCL. From the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, to courses like Legislation and Government Contracts, I have been able to explore a variety of courses to expand my skillset and knowledge to better prepare me for a career in education law. Not only have I benefitted from the coursework but from the mentorship I received from professors within the Program.” – Wendy Bonilla, Class of 2019
