AUWCL Welcomes the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization’s 21st Advisory Committee Meeting

American University Washington College of Law is hosting the 21st Meeting of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization’s (ITSO) Advisory Committee Feb. 8-9, 2018. Comprised of 23 of the 149 Parties to the ITSO Agreement, the Advisory Committee convenes between ITSO’s Assembly of Parties and gives advice and feedback to the Director General of ITSO between Assembly of Parties. Government officials, including ministers, ambassadors, and regulators are in attendance and AUWCL students are providing support during the meeting.
AUWCL will also host ITSO’s first ever ITSO Symposium on June 12, 2018 and its 38th assembly of Parties from June 13-15, 2018.
ITSO’s executive organ is comprised of the Director General, Patrick Masambu, and the Director of Legal Affairs, AUWCL alumna, Renata Brazil David ’10. The partnership between AUWCL and ITSO has led to the creation of the Program on International Communications Regulation and Policy, which is headed by Brazil David. The Program has previously held two live courses at AUWCL: a Spring semester course on International Communications Regulation and Policy and a Summer course titled International Communications Law: A Comparative Perspective. Its online course, Basic Principles of International Communications Regulation and Policy, which has been very well received by 297 students from 69 different ITSO member states, will be held again starting April 23, 2018.

Originally established in 1973 as INTELSAT, the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization was restructured in 2001. The restructuring led to the creation of a private entity, Intelsat S.A. and to the continuation of the intergovernmental organization with a new acronym (ITSO).
