International & Comparative Legal Studies (ICLS) hosted, once again, the 21st Annual Grotius Lecture that also serves as the opening lecture for the Annual Meeting American Society of International Law (ASIL).  The Grotius Lectures were initiated over 20 years ago by AUWCL’s International Legal Studies Program in collaboration with American Society of International Law (ASIL). The Speaker this year was Professor Martti Kokenniemi from University of Helsinki .

2018-19 Humphrey Fellows' Celebrated at Certificate Ceremony

On April 25, the law school celebrated the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows' accomplishments during their annual Certificate Ceremony. The program is coordinated by Professor Padideh Ala’i, director of the International and Comparative Legal Studies Program. American University Washington College of Law is the only law school in the country hosting the Humphrey Fellowship Program, funded by the Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

On Tuesday, April 30, Professor Paul Williams testified before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs in a hearing on Kosovo Wartime Victims: The Quest for Justice. Williams, a prominent international lawyer with experience designing accountability mechanisms, was asked to address the remedies which have been made available to victims of the Kosovo War of 1999.

During the week of June 24, 2019, in Medellin, Colombia, the Organization of American States (OAS) celebrated its 60th Anniversary, in commemoration of the constituting Bogotá Conference in 1948. On June 26, one of the OAS principal institutions, the Inter-American Human Rights Commission, held a formal celebration to commemorate its contributions to the international protection of human rights.
