Remembering International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists
November 2nd marked the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. In observance of the date, the Academy is proud to bring you another episode of our "Human Rights Voices" podcast series that brings you prominent human right advocates sharing their experiences and insights about the most relevant and recent human rights topics and issues. For this episode, Co-Director Claudia Martin sat with Edison Lanza, Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
In the podcast, Edison Lanza talks about the case of the journalists and employee of Ecuadorian newspaper El Comercio, who were kidnapped and then killed on the border between Ecuador and Colombia by the FARC. The Rapporteur discusses the measures adopted by the IACHR in face of this situation, including the adoption of a precautionary measure in favor of Javier Ortega Reyes, Paúl Rivas Bravo and Efraín Segarra Abril. He also talks about the establishment of the Special Follow Up Team, which was set up to investigate the killings and the recommendations that the IACHR has issued regarding the case.
