Celebrating International Migrants Day

Panel "Human Rights and Human Mobility: Protecting the Vulnerable in a Time of Populism"

On December 18 the United Nations celebrates International Migrants Day. The purpose of the day is to remember people who have been displaced due to armed conflict, famine and other natural and man-made disasters. A number of events take place in conjunction with the annual event, and communities around the world are encouraged to hold candlelight vigils to remember migrants. Given the growing importance of the issue, the Academy has elected “The Protection of Migrants under International Human Rights Law” as the topic for two of our programs in 2019: the 24th Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition and the Human Rights Essay Award.

Next year’s Competition will take place from May 19 – 24, 2019 at WCL campus in Washington, DC. The hypothetical case (available HERE) was written by Alvaro Botero Navarro, member of the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families and Coordinator for Human Rights Monitoring and for the Rapporteurship on the Rights of Migrants at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. We are currently accepting registration for the Competition is now open, and interested participants can register HERE.

The Human Rights Essay Award is an annual competition aimed at stimulating the production of scholarly work in international human rights law. Every year, the Academy grants two Awards, one for the best article in English and one for the best article in Spanish. Each winner receives a full scholarship to the Program of Advanced Studies on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, including travel expenses, and the best articles may also be published in the American University International Law Review.
