Gender and Law Lunch and Learn: Reproductive Injustice in the DC Metro Area

12:00PM - 01:30PM Washington College of Law N104

Did you know that the US has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the developed world? Did you know that black and brown mothers in the US are three and four times more likely to die during and immediately following childbirth? Safe childbirth experiences for women of color in the DC metro area is even more volatile. DC mothers are twice as likely to die because of pregnancy than the average American woman, and due to maternity ward closures, mothers living east of the Anacostia River are multiple bus rides away from the nearest hospital. This is one of the many reasons, babies in Southeast die at nearly 10 times the rate of those in Northwest.

Join the Women and the Law Program for Reproductive Injustice in DC on March 26th at noon in Room N101 at WCL to learn more about the legal responses to the closure of two DC maternity wards in communities of color and other reproductive injustices that affect the wellbeing, safety, and health of women and families in the DC metro area, with special guests Nnennaya Amuchie, State Strategies Manager from All* Above All and Claudia Booker, Certified Professional Midwife and founder of DC Midwives of Color. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP to womenlaw@wcl.american.edu.
