Transgender Housing Policies

PREA’s protections for transgender inmates rely on the compliance of correctional authorities and the strong oversight of local, state and federal actors, civil society and the public  Our current research reveals that  while state or local authorities  may have indicated that they have adopted  PREA standards, some may still be lagging in creating or implementing specific policies to address the protection and treatment of transgender people in custody.

This 50-state survey collects publicly available information on the transgender policies for states and localities.  In collecting this information, we have examined agency websites; reached out to agency PREA coordinators; contacted state and local officials; and collected information from publicly available sources such as newspapers and search engines such as LexisNexis and Westlaw.

This research is ongoing, and as policies change, we welcome any updates and corrections of these materials.
