Trainings and Resources
The Center's program in Human Rights in Business holds various types of events to educate the public, academics, students, civil society representatives, and legal and business practitioners on key issues and trends related to business and human rights. We also conduct trainings on topics relevant to our focus project areas.
This session from the Center’s Human Rights Reading Group provided background on the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and examined the human rights dilemmas that may arise when companies implement their responsibility to respect human rights in complex environments.
This seminar examines a new international standard, ISO 18788, which is a risk management framework for the conduct of private security operations. Two years in the making, the purpose of ISO 18788 is to enable consistent provision of security services while maintaining the safety of clients and ensuring respect for human rights and national and international law. It stands out as the first auditable ISO standard with human rights at its core. During this seminar, participants learned more about the standard, its incorporation into U.S. government procurement policy, and how to implement it and prepare for certification.
This workshop explored requirements and methods for delivering essential training relating to the operations of private military and security companies (PMSCs) as enumerated in national and international industry standards and required in many contracts with clients of the industry. Those interested can access on the Center’s You Tube channel video recordings of the workshop sessions which identify practical approaches for training that: promote compliance with international law by PMSCs, their personnel, and clients of the industry; effectively aid in managing risks that may lead to international humanitarian and human rights law violations; and are broadly applicable within the context of armed conflict and beyond to complex emergencies and other comparable situations.Read more
