Past Initiatives and Projects

For over three decades, the Center has worked with partners in the U.S. and in dozens of countries around the world to create and implement unique training, research, and advocacy opportunities for students, academics, activists, and legal practitioners. These projects have enabled the Center to participate in cutting-edge areas of international human rights and humanitarian law, and create new tools and strategies for the advancement of international norms. Accountability for the Security Sector in Risk EnvironmentsThe ASSURE Project sought to foster respect for human rights by private security companies through strategic engagement with industry leaders and key stakeholders.

Collaboration with University of PeshawarThe Center received grant support from USAID in 2009 to build capacity of core faculty at the University of Peshawar in Pakistan to support their Human Rights Studies Centre and Gender Studies Department.

Colombia Law School PartnershipThe Center launched a partnership in 2012 with Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali and Universidad Santiago de Cali to strengthen the capacities of law schools to train future human rights practitioners and advocates.

Combating Sexual Harassment within Human Rights OrganizationsIn 2019, the Center received funding to support research on how to achieve better policies and procedures regarding sexual misconduct within international and regional human rights bodies.

Financial Humanity ProjectIn 2012, the Center created the Financial Humanity Project to address the problem of global food insecurity caused by uncontrolled speculation in the commodities markets.

Genocide Education InitiativesThe Center launched two genocide education initiatives in 2004: the Rwanda Commemoration Project and the Genocide Teaching Project.

Gender & Legal Education in IndiaIn 2000, the Center, together with the Women and the Law Program, launched an initiative to promote the integration of gender into Indian legal education.

Herman Schwartz Israel Human Rights Law Fellowship ProgramThis fellowship program offered Israeli lawyers (both Palestinian and Jewish) a two-year academic and professional experience at AUWCL and internships with U.S.-based public interest groups.

Human Rights Impact AssessmentConnecting practitioners in the natural and social sciences, business, human rights, and law to facilitate respect for human rights.

Human Trafficking and Forced LaborIn 2008, the Program engaged in research, policy and debate around the widespread human rights abuses of human trafficking and forced labor.
