A Fireside Chat on the Work of the SEC’s Division of Corporation Finance

Fireside Chat

On April 10, 2023, the Business Law Program hosted a fireside chat on the Work of the Division of Corporation Finance with Director Erik Gerding. On leave from his position as a Professor of Law at the University of Colorado (Boulder), Director Gerding joined the SEC in October 2021 and led work in legal and regulatory policy in the Division of Corporation Finance before being tapped to head the Division in January 2023.

Director Gerding spoke on the work of the Division and answered questions from students and faculty.  Topics covered a range of current SEC disclosure  policies and initiatives, including recent developments and debates surrounding crypto markets, climate change , and ESG risks. Director Gerding also discussed the Division’s recent work on supply chain disclosures as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the role of companies with connections to China.

Director Gerding encouraged students to get involved in public service, and he gave helpful advice on how to begin a government job search, where to look, and what a “typical” day is like both in the Division of Corporate Finance and more generally at the SEC.
