Chris White (’19) is an associate at Shearman & Sterling LLP and a board member at Targetscope Inc. In 2019, Shearman & Sterling initiated a partnership with the National Verterans Legal Services Program (NVSLP), which has resulted thus far in Shearman’s representation of five veteran clients. Chris works with these veterans to navigate the appeal of their discharge characterizations. The clients suffer from a variety of mental health issues that were likely triggered by their arduous experiences in the armed forces. In some cases, the stress of service coupled with mental health issues allegedly caused misconduct that led to the veteran’s separation from service with an “other than honorable” discharge characterization. Veterans with less than honorable discharge can lose access to critical healthcare benefits, experience difficulties in the job market, and suffer negative mental health effects from their discharge. Chris helps these veterans submitting applications to discharge review boards of the Navy, Army and Air Force. Through this advocacy, Chris works to bring veterans the benefits and recognition they deserve for their service.
