Meet the Fall 2016 LLM Board

LUIZA PAES DE CARVALHO BAENA SOARES | BRAZIL

– President –

Luiza Baena is a Brazilian lawyer and currently an LL.M. candidate in International Legal Studies at American University Washington College of Law, specializing in Human Rights. She holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Centro Universitário de Brasilia, in Brasilia, Brazil. She has worked in both the public and private sectors, notably with tax, international law, and immigration. In her first semester, she was a Dean’s Fellow for the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court. Currently, she is a Research Associate at the Public International Law and Policy Group and will begin as a consultant at the Inter-American Development Bank at the Office of Institutional Integrity. Luiza has lived in Argentina, Mexico, United States, Spain, and Brazil.

ISABELA F. EMERICK ALBERGARIA | BRAZIL

– Vice President –

Isabela F. Emerick Albergaria is a Brazilian lawyer and currently an LL.M. candidate in International Legal Studies at American University Washington College of Law, specializing in Human Rights. She obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree from Faculdade de Direito de Vitória in 2015. She has a passion for international law and moot courts, and working with non-profit organizations who provide legal counseling. Currently she’s assisting the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law with the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition. In her free time she enjoys travel and learning new languages and cultures.

KAVELL JOSEPH | TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

– Treasurer –

Kavell Joseph is a qualified attorney from the Commonwealth jurisdiction of Trinidad and Tobago. She has been actively involved in International Environmental Legal Research for over a period of three years. She possesses a Bachelor of Laws (Honors) degree from the University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago with focus given to Corporate Law and International Environmental Law. She received her Legal Education Certificate from Hugh Wooding Law School. Ms. Joseph helped launch the first national recycling battery project in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) through the NGO Green Warriors and was an environmental advocate for the NGO Sustain T&T. Ms. Joseph is pursuing her LL.M. in the International Legal Studies Program at American University Washington College of Law.

ARMIS SADRI | IRAN

– Secretary General –

Armis is an LLM student specializing in International Human Rights. She graduated with an LLB degree from Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran. While she was doing her Masters in International Law at SBU, as the best oralist of the Iranian champion team, she competed in international rounds of the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition in Washington DC in 2015. Armis is a staff writer for the Human Rights Brief, Dean’s Fellow for Dean Claudio Grossman’s Committee against Torture project as well as for the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. Her interests are human rights in the Middle East, the politics of human rights, and Islam and human rights. In her free time, she enjoys reading, listening to music, and playing musical instruments.
