Certificate of Attendance


Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

1) Be enrolled in a law degree program at a U.S. law school accredited by the ABA or at a foreign law school with equivalent standards and have completed the first year;

2) Hold a law degree whether from a U.S. law school accredited by the ABA or from a foreign law school with equivalent standards;

3) Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field related to international affairs, government, political science, journalism, or any other field related to human rights.

The Certificate is the only option available to persons interested in the program who are not lawyers or are not pursuing a US law degree.

*Special arrangements can be made for international students interested in taking courses for academic credit in their home countries.

Language Requirement

Applicants whose first language is not English and who wish to enroll in English classes may be asked for proof of English competency by submitting one of the following:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 580 on a paper based test or 93 on the internet based
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) with a minimum score of 63
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.5
  • International Legal English Certificate (ILEC)
  • An English language course at a language institution
  • A higher degree program in an accredited English-speaking institution
  • A study abroad program that required taking courses in English


Exams are only mandatory for participants interested in transferring credit to their universities in their home country, or participants whose sponsors require them to do so.

There is a mandatory reading period between June 17 and 23 to allow students to complete the required post-course reading for their courses. The exam period will go from June 24 - August 3, 2017. Participants will retrieve and submit exams electronically at their convenience anytime between these dates. Therefore, participants are not required to stay in DC after June 16. Each exam has a time limit of 48 hours. Exams are graded out of 100 points and there will be a 10 point deduction for exams not completed within the 48-hour time frame. All exams must be completed by 11:55 PM EST on August 3. No late exams will be accepted. Failure to complete the exam will result in an F. A passing grade of C is required for all exams for the courses in which you are enrolled in order to transfer your credits to your home institution. More information

Attendance Policy
All participants are expected to attend 90% of all course sessions. This means you can only miss two class sessions for 14-day courses and one for shorter courses. Two late arrivals will be considered an absence. If you miss more than two classes, the course will not be included in your Certificate of Attendance.

Participants can receive a full refund if they withdraw from courses within the specified time frame: before the end of the second day for 14-day courses and before the end of the first day for courses that meet for fewer than 14 days. All reading materials must be returned.
