Why Health Law & Policy?

As the health care industry continues to rapidly evolve and expand, the intersection of law and health grows increasingly more complex. While the health care industry makes up nearly 20% of the U.S. economy, WCL recognizes that health law & policy is a multidimensional field, covering policy, financing, medicine, population health, reimbursement, ethics, and technology. AU WCL brings the practice of health law directly into the classroom, training students to become leaders in the complex and dynamic fields of health law & policy.

Health Law & Policy at WCL

Health Law & Policy at WCL equips its JD and LL.M. students with the education, training, and practical skills to not only understand the health care industry, but to keep pace with the continually shifting landscape. The law school's health law & policy curriculum includes a health law specialization for Law & Government LL.M. students and a depth of health law courses that few law schools are able to match. Our location in Washington, D.C., allows us to bring expert health law practitioners and policymakers into the classroom as adjunct faculty and guest lecturers. Students can take our health law courses during the fall and spring semesters and during the annual Health Law & Policy Summer Institute, which is also open to legal professionals and to law students outside of WCL. The Summer Institute offers a range of cutting edge courses, taught by leading health law experts, with each course delving into the legal, regulatory, policy, and compliance implications of the subject matter at hand.

Student Opportunities in Health Law & Policy

Students interested in the field of health law & policy have a myriad of leadership and enrichment opportunities through the law school. The Health Law & Policy Students Association (HLPSA) and other groups work with faculty to organize conferences, career panels, and networking opportunities that complement the health law & policy curriculum. The Health Law & Policy Brief (HLPB) is an online publication with a blog component run by WCL law students. HLPB publishes articles on a wide array of cutting-edge topics including health care compliance, fraud and abuse enforcement, health insurance payment and reimbursement issues, pharmaceutical intellectual property issues, international health‑related and disability-related human rights issues, FDA initiatives and policies, among others. Law students across the nation also have the opportunity to participate in WCL's Annual National Health Law Writing Competition.
